Previous Update: September Update
10 months. We have been doing this for 10 months. I’m giving you now my 10th update. This is the most consistent thing that I’ve done this whole 2020.
October was a great month, no-buy year wise. I have no shopping impulse, no urge to buy things. I’m totally at peace and I’m happy that I’m doing this.
Although I do not buy things, my mom on the other hand… she takes pity on me because she hasn’t seen me in new things for so long that she keeps buying me stuff. Clothes, mostly. Okay I think it’s time… 2021 will be No Buy Year: My Mom’s Update. Lol
As I have nothing to update you, let’s talk about how my journey of No Buy Year affects others – from my perspective. At least this is how I think and hope it is lah.
My life partner
I think he suffered the most. In the beginning of this journey, I was frustrated every time we were in the mall because I couldn’t get stuff. It’s very unfortunate that he’s always there and he’s the only one in my real life that knows that I’m doing and taking this seriously, so naturally he’s the one that needs to hear all about my frustrations.
It’s not pretty. I remember once we had a nice day until I saw something that I wanted but couldn’t get and the day turned sour as I questioned everything and blamed myself for doing this to myself and blamed him for letting me do this to myself and for not trying to help me (by buying me the thing that I wanted!).
In hindsight, I’m glad he didn’t give in because now… I don’t even remember what are those things I badly wanted. Meaning, I don’t even need them!
My family
They don’t know that I’m taking this seriously. So they don’t take me seriously. Haha. But glad that they never pushed me to buy things. And bless my mom, she’s the one that’s been getting me new things. Hahaha, I’m not breaking my rules. My mom is giving me gifts (I don’t ask for them I swear!).
Anyway, I don’t let my life choice to do a no-buy year to affect them. I buy them things, but this time I realized, I’m pickier as to what I buy for them. For my siblings, I rather buy them food, experience, and books. For my mom, I always question her when she wants to buy things, whether it’s a necessity or a want.
My friends
My friends don’t know that I’m doing this. Because I don’t want any sort of discouragement coming from anyone, I’ve discouraged myself enough. Lol. Okay lah, I’m to blame. I’m pretty sure they would support me but I’m just avoiding any possible unnecessary peer pressure. I mean amongst them all, I’m one of the most impulsive shoppers. So if they know I’m doing this, I don’t want them to go “sure ah you don’t want this, boleh ke tahan the whole year?”. I might take that as a challenge, or not.
Anyway, I’m just gonna tell them the results when December ends.
