My Relationship with Money: A Year Ago vs Now

Posted on February 23, 2021February 1, 2021 by Figuringgitout

Prior to starting Figuringgitout, I had a toxic relationship with money. You can read all about it in my first post here. As I became determined to end that relationship, I can slowly feel the changes in my behavior and mindset on money over time.

For fun’s sake, let’s see the many scenarios A Year Ago vs Now (my “A Year Ago” is prior to my No Buy Year okay).

A Year AgoToday
Talking about money made me tense. Whenever my friends started talking about money, I won’t join the conversation.I gladly join the conversation. I’m no longer ashamed about my financial state.
The only person I’m comfortable talking about money with is my partner. But our money conversations always ended up with me crying because I was frustrated.Guys, he noted the difference in my tone and our conversation on money! We can talk about money without the usual sobby ending.
I went to malls almost every weekend. Just for window shopping. But somehow I always ended up buying stuff just because.I don’t have fun walking around the malls anymore. Okay lah, perhaps it’s due to Covid-19. But seriously, I lose interest to be in the malls.
Once I get my monthly salary, I paid all my bills, bought everything I needed (and wanted), and at the end of the month if there’s anything left, I’d save it.The first thing I do after I receive my monthly salary is….. setting aside a portion for savings!
What?! This much left? What did I do with my money?Yeay still have this much left! Despite the pay cut? Not bad.
My jeans ripped a bit, time to find a replacement and buy a new one!Lol no, where’s the sewing kit?
Living with the fear of any emergency coming knocking on my door because I don’t have any savings for it!I still don’t want any emergency coming at me, but I have my emergency fund and insurance in place should it come. Phew.
Oh, that’s on sale? I don’t need it… yet… but… it’s on sale! So sayang if I don’t get it now.Meh, sales will always be here. And I don’t need it! So nope!
Being overcharged by my telco for the month? Ah just ignore it, one time only, it’s a hassle to check on it.No way, I’m gonna email them straight away! Why did I get charged this much?!
Thinking about money made me miserable. So I swept it under the rug. But I’d be extra miserable whenever big expenses coming up.I don’t mind thinking about money. My financial state is not at its best but that’s fine. I’m okay, money and I will be okay.

Yes, money and I will be okay.

Let’s continue figuringgitout.
